( College Fix ) A professor of religious studies at Michigan State University recently argued that white people who practice yoga are guilty of enjoying a “system of power, privilege, and oppression.”
To truly honor yoga, writes Michigan State University professor Shreena Gandhi, white Americans should understand its history, acknowledge the cultural appropriation they engage in, and possibly reduce the cost of yoga classes for poor people, a group that often includes people of color and “recent immigrants, such as Indian women to whom this practice rightfully belongs.”
Gandhi, in an article she recently co-authored, argued yoga as it’s practiced in America today is an extension of white supremacy and the “yoga industrial complex.”
“Yoga became — and remains — a practice which allows western practitioners to experience the idea of another culture while focusing on the self,” wrote Gandhi and co-author Lillie Wolff, a self-described “antiracist white Jewish organizer, facilitator and healer” who is passionate about “decolonizing” yoga.’
“The explosion of yoga studios, yoga videos, apps, yoga pants, and other yoga swag over the last two decades is evidence of this. Yoga contributes to our economic system, but never forget this system is one built upon exploitation and commodification of labor, often the labor of black people and people of the global south,” the two argued in their piece, titled “Yoga and the Roots of Cultural Appropriation.”
“… We must ask, in what ways are we complicit in a system that harms People of Color, queer and trans people, poor people, people with disabilities, and immigrants? Despite our best values and intentions as individuals, our actions (and inaction) are inherently connected with a system of power, privilege, and oppression.”

University of Michigan training session used ‘Privileged Identity Exploration Model’
A two-day professional development conference held recently at the University of Michigan included a training session that aimed to help white employees deal with their “whiteness” so they could become better equipped to fight for social justice causes, according to organizers.
Participants who took part in the “Conversations on Whiteness” session, held December 5 during the university’s Student Life Professional Development Conference, were taught to “recognize the difficulties they face when talking about social justice issues related to their White identity, explore this discomfort, and devise ways to work through it,” the university’s website states.
The goal was to help participants in “unpacking Whiteness” to support students and staff with issues and efforts “related to identity and social justice,” the website added.
The “Conversations on Whiteness” session was one of more than a dozen workshops offered at the conference, held Dec. 4 and 5. The whiteness session utilized the “Privileged Identity Exploration Model” to help white participants explore the “discomfort” of their “white identity,” according to organizers.

The student who got into the Ivy League school explained that she grew up in foster care after her alcoholic parents gave her up when she was 5 years old. She continued: “I had to take care of my brother for 2 years until we got adopted, and then we were both abused by that family and had to go back into the orphanage for another 2 years.”
“I spent long nights studying, and working part time in high school just to support myself and brother. I was lucky enough to have good grades to get into a decent undergrad,” the student wrote, according to the Daily Mail. She detailed the “8 years” she spent working hard to get accepted into college.
“I understand the concept of privilege but it sounds more like you are trying to condescend me rather than be helpful,” she continued. Melissa concluded the conversation with: “Umm okay sweetie, you claim to understand privilege but you can’t even self critique [sic] buh bye.”
The prestigious Yale School of Medicine is considered “highly competitive,” and only 6.5% of its 4,425 applicants were accepted into its Class of 2020, according to the university’s online figures.
Mathematics itself operates as Whiteness

( Fox News ) A math education professor at the University of Illinois says the ability to solve geometry and algebra problems and teaching such subjects perpetuates so-called white privilege.
“School mathematics curricula emphasizing terms like Pythagorean Theorem and pi perpetuate a perception that mathematics was largely developed by Greeks and other Europeans,” she says, according to Campus Reform.
She also says that addressing equity in mathematics education will come when teachers can understand and negotiate the politics outside the classroom.
“On many levels, mathematics itself operates as whiteness. Who gets credit for doing and developing mathematics, who is capable in mathematics, and who is seen as part of the mathematical community is generally viewed as white,” she writes.
Further, she says mathematics operates with unearned privilege in society, “just like whiteness.”

“If one is not viewed as mathematical, there will always be a sense of inferiority that can be summoned” because the average person won’t necessarily question the role of mathematics in society, she writes.
According to the website, Gutierrez adds that there are so many people who “have experienced microaggressions from participating in math classrooms… [where people are] judged by whether they can reason abstractly.”
The University of Wisconsin’s College of Letters & Science is offering a course under African Cultural Studies titled, “The Problem of Whiteness.”
“In this class, we will ask what an ethical white identity entails, what it means to be #woke, and consider the journal Race Traitor’s motto, ‘treason to whiteness is loyalty to humanity.'”
Critical Whiteness Studies aims to understand how whiteness is socially constructed and experienced in order to help dismantle white supremacy. Our class will break away from the standard US-centric frame, and consider how whiteness is constructed globally, with particular attention to paradigmatic cases like South Africa.
Whereas disciplines such as Latino/a, African, and Asian American studies focus on race as experienced by non-whites, whiteness studies considers how race is experienced by white people.
It explores how they consciously and unconsciously perpetuate institutional racism and how this not only devastates communities of color but also perpetuates the oppression of most white folks along the lines of class and gender.

Unhinged! Tarsha Clarke, a 6th grade English Language Arts black teacher, allegedly forced white students to stand and apologize for their “white privilege” at Western Rockingham Middle School in North Carolina.
“[The teacher] caused some of her students to stand up and apologize to other students based on their inequal [sic] opportunities of education,” Farren Wilkinson said.
American Lens was also told by one parent that the incident was more specific than Wilkinson stated.
According to that parent, [the teacher] forced her white students to stand in front of the class and apologize to the minority students for their “white privilege.”
American Lens contacted Stephanie Wray, Principal of Western Rockingham Middle School, [and] asked for comment the alleged white privilege [the] incident […]
Wray indicated no such incident happened.
“In regard to your additional requests, I can not [sic] speak on any individual, however any allegations brought to our attention are investigated thoroughly and proper disciplinary action is taken if needed. Again, I can not speak regarding specific individuals due to personnel law, however the particular incident you asked about was unfounded to happen at our school,” wrote Wray.
Principal Wray’s response appears to be the district standard for The College Fix received the exact same answer after contacting Rockingham spokeswoman Karen Hyler.
