Six-figure construction jobs are going unfilled, CEOs can’t find skilled workers

  • 75% of contractors want to increase their headcount in 2018, thanks to the newly-approved tax reform bill
  • 50% of companies reported having a difficult time filling both craft and salaried worker positions

By Business Leaders FOXBusiness

The construction sector is ready to boom in 2018, but there’s just one problem: There aren’t enough qualified workers.

A new report released by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), found that 75% of contractors want to increase their headcount in 2018, thanks to the newly-approved tax reform bill, the government’s push to rollback red tape, strong economic growth and a continuation of favorable sector trends.

However, 50% of companies reported having a difficult time filling both craft and salaried worker positions. Over the coming year, 53% of companies told the AGC that they expect to continue struggling to find qualified applicants. These challenges come despite the fact that 60% of firms reported increasing base pay to retain or recruit professionals and 36% provided incentives and bonuses toward the same end.

“The general population doesn’t know how rewarding and profitable [construction jobs can be],” Stephen Mulva, director of the Construction Industry Institute (CII), told FOX Business. “Six-figure salaries are not uncommon.”

  • Federal employees making $150,000 or more grew by 60 percent, with the number making more than $100,000 increasing by 37 percent in the same time period.

The 40-page report, titled “Mapping the Swamp” and released by government watchdog group OpenTheBooks, focused on the “size, scope and power” of the federal government — and found salary spending for high-paid employees on the rise.

“The number of highly compensated federal employees is growing,” the report said, describing six-figure salaries as increasingly common.

According to the report, the number of federal employees making $200,000 or more increased by 165 percent between fiscal 2010 and 2016. Federal employees making $150,000 or more grew by 60 percent, with the number making more than $100,000 increasing by 37 percent in the same time period.

The group put its figures in context by comparing these plush payment packages with those of America’s governors.

“Nearly 30,000 rank-and-file federal employees who received more than $190,823 out-earned each of the 50 state governors,” the report said.

Currently, the top gubernatorial earners are Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, who makes $190,823; Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam, who makes $187,500; and California Gov. Jerry Brown, who makes $182,971. The lowest-paid governor is Maine Gov. Paul LePage, making just $70,000, according to numbers from Ballotpedia.

Presidents at America’s private universities saw their pay increase by 9 percent in 2015, according to a new report , with several of them topping $2 million in total earnings.

The average chief received total compensation of nearly $570,000, including salary, bonuses and benefits, according to a survey of 500 schools released Sunday by The Chronicle of Higher Education. Among the highest earners were 10 who made more than $2 million, up from eight who crossed that mark the year before, while another 48 made at least $1 million

Topping the list was Wake Forest University’s Nathan Hatch, whose total pay of $4 million included a payment of nearly $3 million as a perk for leading the North Carolina school for 10 years.

Hatch’s achievements in fundraising and other areas have been worth the investment, said Donna Boswell, head of the university’s governing board.

“President Hatch’s compensation over the course of his tenure reflects his exceptional leadership,” Boswell said in a statement, adding that Hatch has helped raise $795 million as part of an ongoing campaign.

Hatch was followed by Emory University’s James Wagner, who received $3.5 million, and the University of Southern California’s C.L. Max Nikias, with $3.2 million.

  • Marc Morial $870,000 salary: National Urban League President and CEO Marc Morial , a former New Orleans mayor, received a higher salary than any other official in the nonprofits, taking home nearly $870,000
  • The 14 activist groups received as much as 85 percent of their revenue from federal, state and local governments and collectively spent millions on lobbying
  • The National Council of La Raza, a liberal Hispanic activist group recently renamed Unidos US, spent significantly more on lobbying — $1.3 million between 2013 and 2015 — than any other group analyzed by TheDCNF.

( Daily Caller ) Top officials with 14 anti-poverty nonprofits were paid as much as $869,900 as their organizations were enriched with $900 million of taxpayer money, The Daily Caller News Foundation’s (TheDCNF) Investigative Group has found.

The activist groups received as much as 85 percent of their revenue from federal, state and local governments and collectively spent millions on lobbying, TheDCNF’s analysis found. Also, half of the charities’ CEOs made political contributions – nearly all of which was to Democratic candidates.

The groups pursue various activist causes, but each participates in the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Approved Counseling Agencies program, which pays nonprofits across the country to help people “find housing, make more informed housing choices, or keep their current homes,” according to HUD.

HUD awarded at least $42 million to 204 such groups in 2016, which was predicted to assist more than 1.4 million households, agency data shows.

National Urban League President and CEO Marc Morial , a former New Orleans mayor, received a higher salary than any other official in the nonprofits, taking home nearly $870,000 – more than 35 times the poverty line for a four-person family – in 2015.

Morial’s “energetic and skilled leadership has expanded the league’s work around an empowerment agenda … with a renewed emphasis on closing the economic gaps between whites and blacks, as well as rich and poor Americans,” according to the Urban League’s website.

He also contributed the second most to political candidates – $10,400, all to Democrats since 2008, according to OpenSecrets.org.

The nonprofit’s information page adds: “The mission of the Urban League movement is to enable African-Americans to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights.”

More than one-third – or nearly $55 million – of Urban League’s total revenue came from the government.

Operation HOPE chairman, founder and CEO John Bryant received the second highest salary – nearly $542,000 in 2015 – and has donated $2,750 to Democrats since 2008.

Trump wants media to decide where to donate his salary

By Dave Boyer – The Washington Times – Monday, March 13, 2017

President Trump intends to follow through on his promise to donate his government salary to charity, and the White House said Monday that Mr. Trump wants journalists to decide where the money should go.

Mr. Trump, whose salary by law is $400,000, would like reporters to “help determine where that goes,” said White House press secretary Sean Spicer.

The president has feuded frequently with the media in the early days of his presidency, often criticizing some outlets as “fake news.”

When a reporter at the White House daily press briefing suggested the money pay for journalism scholarships, Mr. Spicer replied, “That’d be a great way to do it.”
