New York Times reporter David Sanger appeared on CBS This Morning where he quoted a fake tweet from a fake Mike Flynn twitter account.

From NewsBusters:

In an article, the Times used a quote from “@GenMikeFlynn” asserting, “But if a scapegoat is what’s needed for this Administration to continue to take this great nation forward, I am proud to do my duty.”

This is a fake quote from a fake Twitter account. Appearing on CBS This Morning, Times journalist David Sanger pushed the tweet: “[Flynn] said himself in a Tweet this morning, that while he was responsible, there are others who are responsible, too.”

CBS Norah O’Donnell immediately called out Sanger’s fake news: “That tweet has not yet been verified. Not from a verified account.” Confronted, Sanger backed down: “Okay. I’m glad to hear that point. I’m glad you corrected me on that.”

The New York Times had to issue a correction to the article that was posted by Sanger.

Because of an editing error, an earlier version quoted three posts from an unverified Twitter account purporting to be Mr. Flynn’s, responding to the resignation
